About this Episode

We’re celebrating the 125th birthday of Luxembourg master painter Jean-Pierre Beckius, with his great-granddaughter Lisa Gabrielle Bley. The Beckius family, in collaboration with the Villa Vauban, have painstakingly put together an exhibition of Beckius’ work, which continues at the Villa Vauban through 1 June.
The exhibition is divided into areas that showcase the works he created in France, Italy and the Netherlands as well as closer to home here in Luxembourg.  An impressionist, plein-art painter, Jean-Pierre Beckius loved the romanticism of ruins, nature and solitude, but he also painted portraits and cityscapes.
The Beckius family have spent years gathering paintings, but also personal stories, photos and letters that tell the story of an incredibly prolific and talented painter, who set up his easel and followed his heart and vocation, even as two World Wars raged on the Continent. The result of the family’s research can be seen in part at the exhibition and in the exhibition catalog, but also in the beautiful hardcover book they have produced and in their soon-to-be public online archive.  Learn more from his great-granddaughter, who shares stories she discovered along the way and insights into her great-grandfather’s life and artwork. Â
